Village Forward Our Community
The City of Stone Mountain, aka Stone Mountain Village (SMV). The City of Stone Mountain was originally part of the Creek Nation until it was ceded by the State of Georgia in 1821. During the 1830s, Andrew Johnson, an area pioneer, purchased most of the land, now the City of Stone Mountain. The city developed around Johnson’s land holdings as he sold land to settlers. As plans for a new railroad became known, the community grew around the tracks west of the giant granite outcropping, and the town was named “New Gibraltar,” which was finally changed to Stone Mountain. In 1845, the railroad reached Stone Mountain, and the economy and town grew around the railroad. Stone Mountain is in the Eastern part of DeKalb County and is a suburb of Atlanta that encompasses nearly 1.7 square miles. It has a population of 6,703.
